Supernatural S13 (2017) Review

Supernatural S13 (2017)

With the series ending soon, I thought I’d pick up where I left off and get back on track to finishing the show, starting with Season 13.

Supernatural Season 13 sees a lot of new ground paved for the Winchesters, while also covering some old ground as the overarching narrative follows the return of the 3 archangels Lucifer, evil Michael, and Gabriel, as they fight for power of Earth and for control over Jack, Lucifer’s son.

Starting off, this was a really good season, with it feeling a little draggy at first, but really picking up the momentum around the halfway mark. The narrative choices were great, sprinkling in some great and classic feeling “monster of the week” episodes, among the big through-line of the season.
We see lots of familiar faces pop up like the Wayward Sisters, Mary, and Cass, as well as some classic surprises in Charlie, Bobby, Ketch, Kevin, Gabriel, and Scooby Doo?

It’s also always nice to see Mark Pellegrino return as OG Lucifer because genuinely, nobody gets that role like him. And for once, you almost sympathize with him, until he gets mega powerful and tries to take over the world again. The reintroduction of Michael was also a pleasant surprise, which led to him finally utilizing Dean’s body as his perfect vessel in the final showdown with Lucifer. We also got a lot of pretty well done development for Jack, Lucifer’s son, as he tries to deal with his nephilim powers, as well as trying to fit in as a bright-eyed, teenage boy.

Season 13 proved great, showing that while the show has slowed down some, it still has the star power, the story, and the momentum to keep it interesting 13 years in, which is hard. As always too, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki nail the roles of Sam and Dean, bringing fierce tenacity, emotion, and lots of laughs, which was nice for a change, considering how dark the past few seasons had been.

The overall story though was really great, leading up to a stellar final few episodes which gave us more fantastic fan service, some closure, and of course another cliffhanger ending!

7.8/10
