The Umbrella Academy S2 (2020) Review

The Umbrella Academy S2 (2020)

Now, I don’t usually do this, reviewing one season before I’ve had a chance to do the first, but I couldn’t wait.

Umbrella Academy S2 kicks right off where we left, scattering our main characters throughout early 1960s Dallas, ahead of the assassination of JFK, where, you guessed it, the apocalypse has followed them back in time, causing them to once again band together to save the world.

Firstly, what an amazing season full of great character development, a terrific story, and once again, a beautiful soundtrack. Just like last time, the UA is a bickering, immature mess but it’s much more lighthearted this time around, coming together as one here for the first full time in the series, even maybe adding another member (?).

This time around, the story shines for all of them, with each having their own individual storyline that eventually led to them all finding other. The standout stories though were Klaus, Ben, and the biggest surprise—Diego, who was awesome in this season and really progressed as a character that was likable and the willing hero. Luthor is hilarious this time around, Allison is much more tolerable, and Vanya shows off even more of those insane suppressed powers.

It was visually beautiful, with so many twists and turns that leave you sucked in and unable to not binge the whole season in one sitting. My favorite though, is it’s fun, a change of pace, and uses each scenario to make you laugh, cry, get excited, or sit on the edge of your seat with anxiety. It’s a roller coaster, with the music setting the tone for each scene so well, with another amazing soundtrack that sets it apart from your run of the mill comic properties. Love the nonstop action with a purpose as well. Many films can either do one or the other, with S2 of UA always using it within the parameters of the story, and then turning it up to 11.

A heartwarming, super fun, and kickass season 2 that lived up to all of my expectations, plus I’m a sucker for the 60s, which made this even better, visually and contextually.
Absolutely cannot wait for the inevitable Season 3.
9.4/10
