One Last Shot (1998) Review

One Last Shot (1998)

One Last Shot follows two friends, Robb and GW, who meet up for one last night of fun before Robb moves to Vancouver.

While I don’t see myself ever actually reviewing Trailer Park Boys, or any other non linear, episodic show/sitcom, those guys did and have done all sorts of projects outside of the show, which this is a perfect example off. With GW about to go to college and Robb about to leave for Vancouver to start his own weed business, these two best friends’ lives are about to diverge. The only issue is, Robb is gay and clearly in love with GW and he wants to tell before leaving. This creates a fun and slightly silly romantic comedy, that is also quite serious at times, that sees Robb and GW come out as gay together and leave everything behind to start their new life together. There are some neat little TPB tidbits like the appearance of the shitmobile, Mr. Lahey, and even some of the classic style that this group is known for, but without the trashiness that they are most often associated with.

The short film features a fresh faced John Paul Tremblay and Robb Wells, who work well together, though their chemistry is still in the works. Wells really shows off some range here, being quite serious, though stereotypically foul mouthed, compared to Tremblay, who you can tell had some trouble with acting serious. It was also great seeing the late John Dunsworth show up as GW’s drunken, idiot of a boss, as no one plays that type better than him.

Directed by TPB Mike Clattenburg, One Last Shot is a fun adventure into the lives of these two emerging gay friends on their last night out, showing just how ahead of the curve they were in terms of simple storytelling, as well as showcasing some interesting range in a more serious light.

7.6/10
