The Flying Car (2002) Review

The Flying Car (2002)

The Flying Car follows Dante and Randall as they discuss what Dante would do to be the first to own a flying car, while stuck in traffic one day.

There’s a scene in the original Clerks where Dante and Randall are driving to a funeral and having a prolonged, hilarious discussion about Randall’s cousin who died trying to blow himself, and whether or not Dante would ever do such a thing. Well, the Flying Car takes that scene, and makes a whole short film out of those goofy, existentialist conversations that Randall always drags Dante in, this time about what he would sacrifice to be the first to own a flying car. And in classic Randall fashion, always taking a condescending tone to go against whatever Dante answers with. It’s equal parts hysterical and genuinely stupid, but it’s Randall’s unbelievable ability to bait Dante into a serious conversation about anything to feed into his ridiculous musings that makes it so believable.

Jeff Anderson and Brian O’Halloran return as the perfect duo of Dante and Randall, with each actors delivery being so on-point and perfectly timed for maximum comedic conveyance. Anderson, with his condescending, quick witted, nature, matched with O’Halloran naturally getting fed up and pushed into submission, to only be looked down on for his answer is so damn funny.

I also have to give serious props to writer and director Kevin Smith, who makes a traffic jam argument seem engaging, entertaining, and so witty, especially in watching these two characters playfully go at it over stupid topics, that seem to be from personal experiences in Smith’s life.

It’s astonishing really that such a small, meaningless scene about two dudes stuck in traffic, arguing about pervert, German scientists and flying cars can be so funny and in line with these intelligently hyper-aware characters. Really goes to show the excellent abilities of Anderson, O’Halloran, and Smith.

10/10
