Scooby Doo and the Alien Invaders (2000) Review
Scooby Doo and the Alien Invaders follows Scooby and the gang as they get stuck in Roswell, New Mexico, where aliens are plaguing the locals.
There’s something to be said about the mid-90s to early-2000s Scooby Doo movies, as they had a look and feel that was obviously aimed at kids, but were also enjoyable for adults as well. I think the most interesting aspect was that, for once, Mystery Inc. isn’t just going up against monsters in masks, they are facing real life paranormal and supernatural beings and elements. It’s a clever twist on the classic “the real monsters are humans” cliche and in this case, with the aliens (a topic I just eat up) it’s super cool.
This time Scooby and Shaggy also get love interests in Crystal and Amber, which is refreshingly cute.
Compared to the two movies before this, which were rather dark (looking you at Zombie Island), this is a much lighter take with more goofy, cheeseball humor and romance elements on top of the whole alien premise, which I figured would be a little bit more alien-y, but was surprisingly hopeful in it’s reveal that the main aliens were fake, but that Crystal and her dog were both aliens.
Much of the cast of that series of movies returns, starring Frank Welker, B.J. Ward, Mark Hamill, Jeff Bennett, Candi Milo, and the double edged star, Scott Innes who kills it as both Shaggy and Scoob. Along with great voice acting, the animation is terrific and the dark but saturated coloring is a really good look.
Scooby Doo and the Alien Invaders, directed by Scooby Doo veteran Jim Stenstrun, is a funny, romantic, and spooky turn for Mystery Inc. that blends the endlessly fun world of Scooby Doo with X-Files type aliens in this third movie in the series.
