WandaVision (2021) Review
WandaVision (2021)
WandaVision follows Avengers, Wanda Maximoff and Vision, who are living an idyllic suburban life in a sitcom, but everything isn’t as it seems.
The first Marvel Disney+ show is a smash hit, combining the super heroic action of the MCU, with beautifully mysterious storytelling that takes us through the decades as a heartwarming sitcom. They nailed the tone, being a comedic and sweet sitcomified version of Wanda and Visions lives on the surface, but is very David Lynchian, containing true moments of tense horror that ramp up with each passing episode. I loved the sitcom style as well, taking us through the 50s, all the way to the 2010s with tons of nods to classics like Bewitched, Malcom in the Middle, and I Love Lucy.
The show also introduces so much to us including the “return” of Quicksilver, Wanda and Vision’s kids Billy and Tommy, the origin for Monica Rambeau, White Vision, and of course, the evil witch, Agatha Harkness. All of this was introduced so naturally, and I have to admit, Agatha being the one to unlock Wanda’s true potential as the Scarlett Witch was incredible. Also kudos to the show runners for leavings us with as many questions as answers, and still keeping the story very self contained.
The cast was excellent, including Kathryn Hahn, Evan Peters, Teyona Parris, Randall Park, Kat Dennings, Paul Bettany, and Elizabeth Olsen. Olsen and Bettany really gave credence to their “unusual couple” dynamic, but it all felt so genuine and their chemistry was knockout, something that really makes you hopeful for their futures. Each character felt thoroughly fleshed out and contributed to much of the heart of the series.
WandaVision, based on the House of M comic, is very much the origin story of the Scarlett Witch that expands on the lore of her character, as well as the sincere relationship her and Vision share. It made me laugh, cry, and every emotion in between and it’s message on the enduring nature of love, within the premise of a superhero show made for the most unique and powerful Marvel property yet.
10/10
