Bio-Dome (1996) Review

Bio-Dome (1996)

Bio-Dome follows two monumentally stupid friends, Bud and Doyle, who enter a science experiment while looking for a bathroom, only to get trapped inside the artificial ecosystem for a year, where the wreak mayhem for the scientists inside.

Well…I put it off long enough. While it wasn’t as bad as expected, this was still a very rough watch. I never really understood that weird little neandertholic genre of comedy where stupid people just do preposterously stupid things and sabotage everything around them, as well as their own lives, in the most self destructive way imaginable (with no consequence). It just leaves you with an exorbitant amount of second hand embarrassment and for myself personally, it feels like the movie watching equivalent of developing deep seeded road rage.

So, if you haven’t gathered by now, boy is this one of the most braindead and idiotic movies I’ve ever seen. It spends the majority of the flick subjecting us to the mind-numbingly stupid actions of Bud and Doyle, two of the most annoying, self centered, imbeciles on the planet (which the whole goal of the Bio-Dome project is trying to steer us from ironically). It doesn’t take long to hate them with a burning passion, which makes their behavioral confrontation too little too late, as they could literally bring about world peace and you’ll still likely despise them with every fiber of your being.

On top of that, we get a wishy, washy cast, starring Joey Lauren Adams, William Atherton, Stephen Baldwin, and Pauly Shore. The pairing of Shore (who aside from his role in Encino Man, is insufferable) and Baldwin is downright infuriating and if their goal was to be as painfully annoying as possible, boy did they nail it on the head. It’s bad when the best performance of this miserable film is a 3 second cameo by Tenacious D.

Bio-Dome, directed Jason Bloom, is on some deeper level, meant to be a funny comedy with aims at promoting saving the planet, but all it accomplishes by movies’ end is enticing every viewer to take their copy and drop it into the nearest volcano to never lay eyes on it again (I’m running out of ways to say “boneheaded” and “infuriating” to describe this trainwreck).

4/10
