Star Wars Visions: The Twins (2021) Review
Star Wars Visions: The Twins (2021)
The Twins follows two siblings, Karre and Am, who are destined to rule the galaxy alongside one another. After a vision that Karre has of Am dying however, he takes every step necessary to protect, a move that pits brother and sister against each other in a fight of light over dark.
Damn! What an episode! Star Wars, in all respects, is a story about family and the destiny one holds when there is a legacy to uphold. And quite obviously, Studio Trigger understood that because this episode just feels like Star Wars (the original trilogy more specifically). Aside from the evident visual cues to the Empire, this really takes us back to that original feel while also doing something completely new, and totally breaking canon while we’re at it (though this show has already been said to be removed from canon and is just random stories that take place in a universe far, far away).
Pitting brother against sister in the from of Karre and Am feels like the inevitable future of Luke and Leia had they left the clutches of Vader, even visually paralleling his suit for the pair early on. This complex family narrative and the outright ridiculous action that ensues, not only adds some crazy cool shit—like manifesting and overloading lightsabers, but it’s that theme staying true to it’s roots that makes it all the more effective.
Gotta say too, Trigger fucking blew me away with the animation in this. It was colorful but dark, letting the reds and blues carry the load against the black emptiness of space, while just on a character design standpoint, everything simply blew me away. I really admired the visual cues or references to The Last Jedi too, with several scenes seemingly ripped right out of the movie (and carrying much more weight as well).
This project also stars Alison Brie and Neil Patrick Harris, and while Brie was no doubt the weaker of the two, it was interesting fun seeing her go full force. Harris however was incredible, as he brought such an emotional complexity that carried in every line he let out that really gave me some Luke in Return of the Jedi vibes to it (aside from the obvious story parallel too).
The Twins, created by Studio Trigger, is another kickass episode for Visions, throwing it back to the roots of Star Wars with a classic family story that very clearly comes from a place of passion. Really hope to see this story continued at some point, as well as see more from Studio Trigger on down the series line.
