Shoresy (2022) Review

Shoresy (2022)

Shoresy follows Shoresy, who moves to Sudbury, Canada, to join a senior AAA hockey team in his quest to never lose again.

For fans of Letterkenny, many will say Shoresy, the always-chirping, dirtiest hockey player around, is one of the shows all time best characters, and so naturally, I was over the moon at hearing he would be getting own spinoff and taking his talents to the Sudbury Bulldogs. Excitement that was well rewarded too, with Jared “the pride of Canada” Keeso taking the previously faceless Shoresy and elevating him to new heights here. Obviously, hockey takes on more of pivotal role in the spinoff, as Shoresy looks to pull the Bulldogs out of last place and a 20 game losing streak and get them into the playoffs to keep the team alive, but it’s the way that hockey is used as a device to naturally create both drama and comedy that makes this so worthwhile.

Shoresy is already well-known for his chirpy humor, which is arguably never better than here, however we aren’t used to seeing the passionate, often romantic, and brotherly sides to him that come out when his back is against the wall. Despite their losing ways, there’s a pride and love that starts to form for Sudbury and his boys, that by the season finale, his passion for hockey seems reinvigorated, though his sincerity seems to transcend far past the game (which I wasn’t expecting at all from a raunchy, Letterkenny spinoff).

We get a wonderful cast here too, starring Camille Sullivan, Ryan McDonell, Blair Lamora, Keilani Elizabeth Rose, Max Bouffard, Jonathan-Ismaël Diaby, Andrew Antsanen, Terry Ryan, Harlan Blayne Kytwayhat, Tasya Teles, and Jared Keeso. Keeso, even in bringing a surprising amount of heart and camaraderie, is fucking comedy gold as Shorsey. His ability is to just chirp your ear off and degrade you in the smartest ways imaginable is utterly hilarious and I can’t think of anyone more perfect for a lovable asshole like him.

Shoresy, directed by Jacob Tierney, is another hilarious home-run for the Letterkenny crew, proving that fan-favorite Shoresy can easily hold his own in his own series while doing something different yet familiar from where he got his start.
